Young Jeezy Nets Second Album Chart-Topper, Game #2

September 10, 2008

Young Jeezy claims his second chart-topper on the Billboard 200 as “The Recession” starts at No. 1 this week. The Def Jam set moved 256,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, 92,000 short of the 352,000-unit start for his previous No. 1, 2006’s “The Inspiration.”

For the first time in 14 years, the newly reunited New Kids On The Block enters the chart with “The Block” (Interscope) at No. 2. The album was led by the single “Summertime,” which has moved 505,000 digital copies and peaked at No. 36 on the Hot 100. The band’s last studio effort, 1994’s “Face the Music,” bowed at No. 37 with 27,000. “The Block” gives the band its best charting week since “Step by Step” climbed to No. 1 in 1990.

Last week’s runner-up, the Game’s “LAX” (Geffen), slips to No. 3 with 89,000, a 63% sales loss. Kid Rock’s “Rock N Roll Jesus” (Top Dog/Atlantic) moves 79,000, falling 3-4 on a 12% decline.

After barely beating out “LAX” on top last week, Slipknot’s Roadrunner album “All Hope Is Gone” descends to No. 5 on a 69% dip to 75,000. The Decca soundtrack to “Mamma Mia!” moves 5-7 with 56,000 (-27%).

Rock band Underoath lands at No. 8 with the Solid State/Tooth & Nail set “Lost in the Sound of Separation,” which sold 56,000. It also debuts at No. 1 on Top Christian Albums. The sextet’s last studio set, 2006’s “Define the Great Line,” arrived at No. 2 on The Billboard 200 with 98,000 and No. 1 on Top Christian Albums.

Chris Tomlin enters The Billboard 200 at No. 9 and Top Christian Albums at No. 2 with “Hello Love” (EMI CMG), which sold 52,000. It’s the best charting and sales week yet for the veteran act.

Lil Wayne’s Cash Money effort “Tha Carter III” rounds out the top tier with 47,000, falling 6-10 on a 14% sales decline.

“Just a Rolling Stone” (Bad Boy), the first solo effort from former Day26 member Donnie Klang, arrives at No. 19 with 22,000. Earlier this year, the “Making the Band 4″ group’s self-titled debut bowed and peaked at No. 1 with 190,000.

Former Beach Boy Brian Wilson’s “That Lucky Old Sun” (Capitol) debuts at No. 21 with 21,000. It’s Wilson’s first new studio album since 2004’s “Gettin’ in Over My Head.” Also that year, he completed work on the long-unfinished album “Smile,” originally intended for release by the Beach Boys in the mid-1960s.

Other debuts this week include Hollywood Undead’s “Swan Songs” (A&M/Octone, No. 22, 21,000), actor and musician Terrence Howard’s recording debut “Shine Through It” (Sony, No. 31, 14,000) and the iTunes exclusive soundtrack to the internet film-musical “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog” (starring Neil Patrick Harris) (No. 39, 12,000).

At 6.75 million units, sales this week are down 5.6% from last week’s sum and down 8.2% from the same week last year.

The Game Hits #1 For A Third Time; Talks Success

September 3, 2008

The months of delays and push-backs had little effect on The Game’s momentum, as the Compton MC’s L.A.X. debuted #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 with over 220,000 copies sold.

The album marks Game’s third consecutive #1 debut.

Adamant to fans and media alike this will be his last album, Game feel assured that this album is a fitting end to his legacy as a solo artist and quiets critics who questioned his songwriting ability.

“Being #1 for the third time makes me feel good, especially since I put my all into this album,” a proud Game explained to AllHipHop.com. “There should be no doubt by the critics if a label, producer or hook singer can stagger my ability to make songs or an album. I hope my fans enjoy this one more than others, because this one defines me, my life, and my place in Hip-Hop.”

On iTunes alone, the album sold 130, 000 copies the first day of release.

Manager and mogul Jimmy Rosemond is equally ecstatic about Game success, but seriously doubts the Compton native will hang up the mic after achieving this milestone.

“Sometimes it takes three #1 albums to convince you, that just maybe you shouldn’t retire,” Rosemond reflected. “Game has beat the odds with a classic and great album.”

Black Wall Street/Czar DJ Young Legend echoes Rosemond’s words, but is more impressed that Game was able to deliver in spite of all the legal, personal, and professional conflicts that have played out in the media over the past year.

“L.A.X. is a classic album from front to back,” Young Legend exclaimed. “Even through all the adversity and drama, Game managed to deliver his third classic album to his fans. You can never count the Game out!’”

L.A.X. features a staggering guest list of today’s top Hip-Hop and R&B stars: Lil Wayne, Nas, Ice Cube, DMX, Ludacris, Common Raekwon, Chrisette Michele, Raheem DeVaughn, Bilal, Ne-Yo, LaToya Williams, and Keyshia Cole.

Game’s third album L.A.X. is available now in stores and through iTunes download.

Slipknot Edges The Game Atop Billboard 200

September 3, 2008

Slipknot’s “All Hope Is Gone” barely wins out over the Game’s “LAX” in the race for No. 1 on The Billboard 200 this week. The Roadrunner set moved 239,516 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, only 1,134 more than the rapper’s Geffen album at 238,382.

This marks the first No. 1 for the masked hard rockers, who scored a No. 2 with 2004’s “Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses” and a No. 3 with 2001’s “Iowa” (named for the group’s home state). The Game’s last two efforts, 2006’s “Doctor’s Advocate” and 2005’s “The Documentary,” both debuted at No. 1.

Kid Rock’s “Rock N Roll Jesus” (Atlantic) takes an 11% sales hit to 89,000, falling 2-3. After two weeks at No. 1, the Jonas’ Brothers’ Hollywood set “A Little Bit Longer” slides to No. 4 with 80,000 (-45%).

The “Mamma Mia!” soundtrack (Decca) slips 4-5 on an 11% decrease to 78,000. With only a 5% loss in sales, Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter III” (Cash Money/Universal) climbs a slot 7-6 with 54,000.

The multi-label compilation “Now That’s What I Call Country,” the latest version of the successful “Now” series, debuts at No. 7 with 50,000. Other spin-offs of the hits-based collections include Christmas tunes, Latin music, No. 1s, ’80s hits and classic rock. Of these offshoots, only the “Now No. 1s” set boasted a bigger opening week, when it started at No. 6 with 90,000.

Sugarland’s “Love on the Inside” (Mercury Nashville) holds tight at No. 8 for a second week with 47,000 (-17%). At No. 9 with 46,000, Solange, who also happens to be Beyonce’s younger sister, sets some personal bests with sophomore album “Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams.”

Her first album, 2003’s “Solo Star,” peaked in its debut week at No. 49 with 19,000. The new Music World/Geffen album is led by the single “I Decided,” which recently hit No. 1 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart. Capping off the top tier, Coldplay’s Capitol album “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends” rises 11-10 with 44,000 (-5%).

Luis Fonsi lands his best sales week ever as “Palabras Del Silencio” (Universal Latino) starts at No. 15 on The Billboard 200 with 30,000. That also gives him the highest charting album of his career, easily beating the No. 62 peak of 2005’s “Paso a Paso.” Additionally, this entry is the second biggest sales week of the year for a Latin act. Only Luis Miguel came in higher, when his “Complices” started with 32,000 in May.

British metal act Dragonforce, of “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock” fame, also earns its best sales week ever as “Ultra Beatdown” (Roadrunner) charges in at No. 18 with 24,00. The use of the band’s song “Through the Fire and Flames” in the “Guitar” game helped the band move more than 312,000 units of its 2006 parent album “Inhuman Rampage.”

The reunited Verve debuts at No. 23 after selling 21,000 copies of its first album in 11 years, “Forth” (On Your Own/Megaforce). Other debuts this week include Alacranes Musical’s “Tu Inspiracion” (Fonovisa, No. 26, 20,000), Jimmy Wayne’s “Do You Believe Me” (Valory, No. 27, 20,000), the Lost Trailers’ “Holler Back” (BNA, No. 32, 13,000) and B.B. King’s “One Kind Favor” (Geffen, No. 37, 12,000).

At 7.15 million units, sales this week are up 2.3% from last week’s sum but down 6.5% from the same week last year.
